Gualala Dance

Strong. Active. Graceful.

Gualala Dance has closed its physical location but Jennifer Massey continues to coach & teach via Zoom.

Welcome to Gualala Dance. My mission is to provide a welcoming environment for students to join in and have fun while learning through movement.  I am passionately committed to providing each individual the opportunity to learn the art of dance in a positive, structured and inspiring environment.  I offer individual attention, respect toward each student, & gentle guidance through the proper techniques of dance.  I focus on the developmentally conscious use of the body while invoking artistry and self-expression within each dancer.

I begin teaching young students at age 2 1/2 in an action packed 45 minute class of movement which incorporates introductory dance concepts in a lighthearted way. Children ages four through six take a combination of ballet, tap, tumbling, creative & pantomime in a one hour class. Recommended attendance is once per week. Ages seven through twelve take a one hour class consisting of ballet, tap, intro to contemporary, hip hop, & jazz. Recommended attendance is once per week.

Gualala Dance is proud to include the AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE National Training Curriculum, a breakthrough 9 level program that combines high quality artistic training with the basics of dancer health and child development.  The ABT National Training Curriculum consists of a comprehensive set of age-appropriate, outcome-based guidelines to provide the highest quality ballet training to dance students of all ages and skill levels.  Pre-Primary through Level 3 will be taught by ABT Certified Teacher, Jennifer Massey, who has successfully completed the ABT Teacher Training Intensive in Pre-Primary through Level 3 of the ABT National Training Curriculum.

Dance Attire & Footwear

Proper dance attire enables the teacher to see the dancers’ positions and movement in order to give necessary corrections for the benefit of the dancer’s education.

In the beginning classes, for boys or girls, any color or design of leotard, sport top or fitted t-shirt and tights, leggings, or fitted sweat pants may be worn.

Leotards with fluffy net skirts (tutus) attached are not acceptable for class. (During recital showcase season, students will get the opportunity to perform in tutus and other special costumes).

Boys wear sweats or leggings that aren't too loose and a t-shirt that's not too loose.

We request that long hair be tied back.

We do not have a "color code" as such, however, in the advancing ballet levels, a plain color leotard with pink tights is requested but not mandatory. For tap or jazz or any additional styles offered by the studio, there is more freedom for individual style.

As a general rule-

Tiny Tots:  Ballet Shoes

Pre Dance & Beginning Dance Combo: Ballet & Tap Shoes

Jazz Class:  Jazz or Ballet Shoes

Hip Hop:  Shoes w/bounce

Where to Purchase Dance Attire & Shoes:

Jennifer has accounts with the major companies and can help to fit and order your dance gear at wholesale & discounted prices. Please see her before paying retail!

Dance Gear in Santa Rosa has the basics.  Marin Dancewear in Novato is a great shop. We also recommend is another resource for shoes. *Note that Capezio ballet, tap and jazz shoes generally run a half size smaller than your regular shoe size. has ballet shoes & dance wear specifically for boys but any ballet shoe works for younger boys (typically not pink for boys but whatever makes them happy is fine with us!).

If traveling to San Francisco, any student of Gualala Dance Studio will receive a 10% discount at 1887 Dance Shoppe (2206 Union Street, San Francisco, CA 94123, 415.441.1887, Contact: Martita Timiriasieff).

We are always available for any questions regarding attire or shoes.  Happy to help.  Just ask!
